--- Marketing is ubiquitous.
Clever ad campaigns and eye-grabbing slogans on the sides of buses,
from TV spokespersons, to covert product placement in movies,
even in the names of baseball stadiums (e.g. San Diego's Qualcomm
Stadium) vie for our attention. It doesn't stop at just boosting
sales for products; sitcoms market family values, parents market
Santa Claus to their kids to keep them in check, governments market
wars, religions each market their own brand of morality. The constant
push from outside sources to convince you that a pair of jeans
you may want is really a pair of jeans that you need is enough
to push some people to make a stand.
--- Whatever the motivation: boredom,
defiance, self-amusement, sabotage with a permanent marker or
can of spray paint transforms well-plotted and strategically placed
piece of corporate propaganda into a statement that transcends
and sometimes even cancels out the original intent of the ad.
The results range from humorous, profound, to esoteric. Other
times the results are crude or outright obscene. Defaced adverts
produce the desired effect of drawing attention, but the unique
juxtaposition of art and commerce often elicit a stringer response
in the viewer than the original content.
--- As advertising gets more sophisticated,
as guerilla marketing co-opts street art as a method of reaching
out to younger target markets, VandalTees.com is taking it back.
--- If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. |
